Varicose veins: who suffers from them?

Varicose veins: who suffers from them?

Who is likely to be affected by varicose veins? When should I go to the doctors?

Anybody with weak connective tissue can develop varicose veins, even young people. Women are three times more likely to suffer from the condition. The most common cause is weak valves in the veins. This results in the blood being pumped through the defective veins to the lower legs instead of to the heart. If untreated, this additional burden can cause damage to the deep venous system. This should not be allowed to happen, because these valves cannot be repaired through surgery. Patients may notice this additional burden through complaints such as swelling, a heavy feeling, and water retention around the ankles. Once varicose veins appear, they will not disappear without treatment and should always be examined by a doctor, preferably before such complaints arise.
